Massage In Schools Association Scotland (MISA Scotland)
The Massage in School Programme is a peer massage programme designed for children in schools between the ages of 4-12. This programme along with the Mini MISP (2-3 year olds), follows on from Baby Massage (IAIM) and teaches the children about safe, nurturing touch.
The MISP consists of 15 strokes done over the clothes and focuses on consent, trust and kindness. The children pair up in class to carry out the routine or they can cope the routine in the air should they want to work alone. The programme is inclusive to all.
The programme has reduced issues such as bullying and allows the children to form new relationships, improves confidence and self esteem and promotes a positive 'I can' attitude.
Families benefit from the programme and like to introduce it as part of the bedtime routine as the massage produces important hormones (oxytocin & melatonin). The massage allows the children to become calmer, accessing the rational thinking part of the brain that allows us to think and learn.
